Posted on January 16, 2021
In 21st century, digital marketing is essential. Regardless of your business industry or your company size, you can’t afford to ignore digital marketing as far as maintaining and growing your business is concerned.
What is digital marketing?
Digital Marketing can be defined as a form of advertising conducted through digital channels. These channels can be search engines, social media, email, websites, web applications, mobile applications, or any new digital channel.
Types of digital marketing
Outlined below are the most popular types of digital marketing:
1. Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
Search Engine Optimization is one of the most effective digital marketing methods today. It involves a set of activities done on or outside a website to help improve its rank on search engine results when people search for various keywords and phrases. The more keywords your website rank for, and the higher it rank, the more people will get to know and visit your website.
The goal for SEO is to have as large traffic(targeted audience) as possible to visit the website organically. To accomplish this, SEO marketers research for words and phrases that consumers use while searching for information online, then optimize those terms in their website content to rank for them.
2. Pay Per Click (PPC)
Pay-per-click can be defined as an internet advertising model used to drive traffic to websites, where an advertiser pays a publisher when the ad is clicked. PPC ads can be implemented in a number of ways such as Ads appearing on search engine results pages, the ads you see when browsing the websites, the ads you see in mobile applications, and those that you see before or within Youtube videos. A popular PPC model is Google Adwords where you pay only when someone clicks on your ad and lands on your website.
The cost of running PPC Ads on search results can vary widely depending on the competition there is for your keywords. The more competitive your keywords are, the more expensive the Ad will cost you and vice versa.
3. Search Engine Marketing (SEM)
Search Engine Marketing is a method of digital marketing that targets gaining traffic and visibility from search engines through both paid and unpaid efforts. It encompasses both SEO and paid advertisements(PPC). Search Engine marketers do SEO, make PPC Ads or do both to ensure their websites rank high in search engine results.
4. Social Media Marketing (SMM)
Social media marketing includes all marketing efforts done via social media channels. It focuses on building brand awareness and increasing conversions. It involves strategically and consistently creating posts on social media and replying to comments. Over time, social media marketers measures and analyze the performance of their posts to come up with robust strategies based on that data. In addition to posting and commenting, SMM also involves creating advertisement campaigns.
A social media marketer can choose one or several social media platforms depending on the target audience and preferences. Some of the most popular social media platforms include: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn and Pinterest.
5. Affiliate Marketing
This is a form of marketing that helps you leverage other people marketing for your business. It is a commission-based method where an affiliate/marketer gets paid a commission for every sale they bring to the business. Most affiliate programs allow affiliates to register on their websites where they are given a link with a unique code identifiable to them eg. https://www.example.com/register?ref=1228. They can then add the link to their websites or share it with their networks on different platforms. When someone clicks on the link and proceeds to buy something, the affiliates earn a commission from the amount paid. It is a win-win way of marketing as the business makes more sales while the affiliates generate income through commissions.
6. Email Marketing
Email marketing is a powerful tool for retaining existing customers as well as gaining new ones. It involves building a list of email addresses of existing and/or potential customers to your business, then periodically sending them emails. The content for these emails may include your business information updates, new blog alerts, and promotional messages (deals and offers). An effective way of building mailing lists that most marketers utilize is having an opt-in/subscription form on the website requesting your website visitors to provide you with their email addresses. Email marketing is an excellent way of building brand awareness, keeping your company top-of-mind, bringing people back to the website, and encouraging repeat purchases.
Just be very careful not to bombard people with too many emails that look spammy. Also, put careful thought into your email subject lines as they influence whether or not a user opens your email.
7. Content Marketing
This method is a bit different from the above, in that it does not directly market the products and services to customers. It is more informational than it is sales-oriented. Content marketing involves creating enriching and valuable content that provides value to the users. This content can be in form of blog posts, videos, infographics, e-books, podcasts, and much more. For example, we as a web development company write articles on web technologies and internet marketing. In whichever niche you are in, you can create some content that people can benefit from. You should create original and high-quality content that your audience would find useful and be willing to share with their networks. The end goal of content marketing is to increase brand awareness, get more traffic and generate conversions.
